Western Frisian Vocabulary - Animals

Hi Western Frisian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we are going to learn some vocabulary related to animals. Animals are an important part of our culture and daily lives. They are fascinating creatures and some animals even have special places in our traditions and folklore. Let's get started!

Mammals[edit | edit source]

Mammals are creatures that have fur or hair and give birth to live young. In Western Frisian, we have many words for different types of mammals. Here are some examples:

Person 1= Ik sjoch in hûn. (I see a dog.)

Person 2= Is it in braune of in read hûn? (Is it a brown or a red dog?)

Person 1= It is in read hûn. (It is a red dog.)


Birds[edit | edit source]

Birds are creatures that have wings and can fly. In Western Frisian, we have many words for different types of birds. Here are some examples:

Person 1= Sjochst dat moaie pikefiskje? (Do you see that beautiful little fish?)

Person 2= Ja, en dêr fljocht in aai. (Yes, and there is an eagle flying there.)

Person 1= Oh, wat in prachtich gesicht! (Oh, what a beautiful sight!)


Insects[edit | edit source]

Insects are small creatures with six legs, usually with wings. In Western Frisian, we have many words for different types of insects. Here are some examples:

Caterpillar [rûge] Caterpillar
Dragonfly [ljip] Dragonfly
Mosquito [muskito] Mosquito

Person 1= Ik sjoch in libel. (I see a dragonfly.)

Person 2= O, it is sa in moaie kleur! (Oh, it has such a beautiful color!)

Person 1= Ja, echt skitterjend. (Yes, truly dazzling.)


Reptiles[edit | edit source]

Reptiles are creatures that have scales or shells and usually lay eggs. In Western Frisian, we have many words for different types of reptiles. Here are some examples:

Crocodile [krokodyl] Crocodile
Snake [slange] Snake
Turtle [skilpad] Turtle
Lizard [leave] Lizard

Person 1= Wat is dat dêr yn it wetter? (What is that in the water?)

Person 2= Dat is in skilpad. (That's a turtle.)

Person 1= O, wat leuk! (Oh, how cool!)
